No injuries at transport truck fire on Highway 1

There were no injuries after a transport truck was completed destroyed in a fire on the east lane of Highway 1 near the Morley exit Friday morning.

STONEY NAKODA – There were no injuries after a transport truck was completed destroyed in a fire on the east lane of Highway 1 near the Morley townsite exit Friday morning.

Fire crews from Exshaw Fire and Rescue responded to the fire shortly after 6 a.m., fire Chief Rick Lyster said. The truck’s cargo, crumb rubber or pulverized tires, led to it quickly engulfing the truck in flames.

“It was a raging fire since rubber’s basically oil. It was quite a fire,” he said.

The fire was under control within an hour of arriving, Lyster said, but some flare-ups occurred with firefighters putting out the hot spots.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 12:30 p.m.

Roughly 38,000-litres (about 10,000 gallons) of water was used to contain and extinguish the fire, Lyster said.

The highway was restricted to one lane and backed up “a couple of kilometres” and was expected to return to two lanes before the end of the afternoon.

“It was a good job by the crew,” he said, noting the fire isn’t suspicious and still under investigation.
