The 2023 season is officially in the rear-view mirror for the Cochrane Piranhas Summer Swim Club, whose members are reflecting on another phenomenal few months in the pool.

“I’m expecting big things from us this year,” Paul said.

Proving they are in the golden years of their lives in more ways than one, 135 seniors from the Big Country Senior Sports Society (BCSSS) showed age is just a number after taking home 86 medals from the Alberta 55 Plus Summer games, held from Aug. 17 to 20.

A battle of the beasts between the Bow Valley Grizzlies and the Banff Bears men's rugby teams saw the Grizzlies walk away victorious with a final score of 45-24, after their match at Mitford Park on Aug. 12.

The Cochrane quartet was selected after competing in a national competition held in June.

“I hope my opponents will remember our fight,” Peacock said. “I don’t plan on giving them an easy winner or anything like that – I’m going to go as hard as I can.”

It was a whirlwind August long weekend for Cochrane rugby player Taia Graham, who was competing for Alberta at the 2023 U16 Western Canadian Championships.

“It kind of shows the depth of these two age groups in Rocky View, which is nice to see,” Barley said.

“It’s a tough lesson to learn. Being a young team, the post-season is definitely a different beast in itself. However, we’re very pleased with our group and the season that was.”

Riders from across the country and around the world braved eight seconds of battle against a bucking bull at the Cochrane Classic Bull Riding at the Cochrane and District Ag Society on July 29.
