SPANIER, Ralph Albert

April 13, 1937 – May 27, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Ralph A. Spanier announces his passing on Monday, May 27, 2019. The first child of German immigrant N.A (Albert) Spanier and his Calgary-born wife Marie Spanier, Ralph joined his father at Calgary Sash and Door Limited (est. 1936) in 1955, where he served his friends, both customers and suppliers, and cared for three generations of loyal employees until 2015. Through business, civic engagement, as president of the Bearspaw Lions Club, brother of Ashlar Masonic Lodge #28, and volunteering at Helping Hands in Cochrane, Speed Skating Canada, Spruce Meadows, the Breast Cancer Society and the Ride to Conquer Cancer, Ralph developed an enormous and diverse web of loyal friendships. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Liz (Nee Kittler). He was a proud father, father in-law and grandfather to son Gord and wife Femeena (Virani), and their children Taylor, Jake and Rehman and to daughter Lorie Gibson and husband Brian. Ralph was predeceased by his younger brother Walter. As in all things, Ralph was dignified, kind and diligent throughout his battle with Pancreatic Cancer and the family is grateful for the care of the staff at Unit 62 at the Foothills Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Ralph asked that his friends consider supporting The Tom Baker Cancer Centre (albertacancer.ca) or Helping Hands (helpinghandscochrane.ca).

A Celebration of Ralph’s Life will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Friday, June 7 at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family, via the website: www.fostersgardenchapel.ca
