SWEET, Colby Daniel

November 1, 1987 – February 13, 2020

It is with the deepest sadness we announce the passing of Colby Sweet at the age of 32. After a remarkable, but regrettably abbreviated life, Colby left much too soon by his own hand.

Colby was a definite blessing, born in Edmonton, Alberta on November 1, 1987 to proud parents Trevor Vern Sweet and Glenda Lee Sweet (Griffin). Colby grew up in Cochrane, AB. along with his older brother Dylan James and then moved on to live most of his adult life in Calgary, AB.

Colby originally attended Glenbow Elementary School, progressed to Mitford Middle School and ultimately graduated, class of 2005, from Bow Valley High School in Cochrane. Along the way, Colby found an instinctive niche and excelled in music with all of the school band programs.

Growing up, Colby enjoyed and loved his sports including soccer in the summer and, notably, hockey in winter with many successful Cochrane Rockies teams. Never a dull moment, Colby appreciated extended family get-togethers, he delighted in family camping trips, where he and his brother often found their way into some sort of snag. He was rarely ever without the close company of Riley the dog, Bobby the cat, or maybe even a new kitten.

Later on, Colby was diverse, adept and held a few markedly different employment positions throughout his short life and worked hard to succeed at all of them. Definitely, Colby’s true passion was his music. Colby was a remarkable percussionist and loved his drums the most, or any drum really. He could certainly shred, as they say. Colby’s other loves and talents included writing, sketching, video games, recording his own music, as well as down time spent with his favorite sidekick and pet cat Weezer.

Colby had a warm demeanor, kind character and a soft heart. He was likeable at introduction, found it effortless to make and harbor new friends, and was a joy to just spend some time with. He was sharp, introspective and self-aware but also thoughtful of others and his relationships.

We all seriously treasure and appreciate the time we got to share with Colby, although it was entirely much too short. Colby was a fine son, happy brother, proper uncle, worthy grandson and definitely a keeper of a good friend to all the others he met. Colby will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him.

Colby is lovingly remembered and desperately missed by his father Trevor (Joan Smyth), mother Glenda (Ben Wills), big brother Dylan (Kim Sabin, niece Adelynne, nephew Liam), proud grandparents John and Eileen Griffin, numerous loving aunts, uncles, close cousins and very many dear friends. Colby was predeceased by his fraternal grandparents, Helen Sweet and Glen Sweet.

A Celebration of Colby’s Life open house will be held at BP’s (15 Westside Drive, Cochrane) on Saturday, March 21 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. If family and friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made, in Colby’s name, directly to Suicide Prevention at the Canadian Mental Health Association (Alberta Division) at secure.cmha.calgary.ab.ca.

In loving memory of Colby Sweet, a bench will be placed in William Camden Park (Glenbow) in Cochrane, AB. In living memory, a tree will be planted at the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, 300 Tower Lane Drive SW, Airdrie, AB. Ph: 403-948-1100.
