Ian Chitwood is the fifth candidate to declare intentions to seek the nomination for the Airdrie-Cochrane UCP, running with the slogan "Unity. Prosperity. Optimism." The fourth-generation Albertan is actively involved in the agricultural sector, with a mixed background in business, industry and the arts. His decision to seek the nomination is rooted in a desire to board a new united conservative movement that can be "socially progressive and fiscally conservative" - what he feels best aligns with the values of everyday Albertans. Limited government intervention and government accountability are integral to Chitwood's belief in how governments should be run. He said there is room for optimism as Alberta is well-positioned to take advantage of a strong commodity markets, relatively strong economic growth predictions, increasingly diverse communities, diversification and growth in innovation. With specifics to the Airdrie-Cochrane riding, Chitwood views healthcare infrastructure as a chief concern - namely advocacy for 24-hour urgent care in Cochrane and for a full-scale hospital in Airdrie. The growth in the region has catapulted education to the top of the priority list, with an estimated need for 14 new schools by 2025. Road projects Chitwood highlights are the interchange project at highways 1A/22 in Cochrane, the 40th Avenue overpass and the Eighth Street/Highway 566 intersection in Airdrie. A review of the carbon tax, commitment to a balanced budget and restoring investor certainty are all central focuses for Chitwood. The Airdronian, who lives on the west side of Airdrie with his wife, holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, a Master of Arts in Integrated Studies and Master of Business Administration. Outside of farming, he has 10 years in industrial operations management. He sits on three volunteer boards engaged in Airdrie, the provincial agricultural sector and the Calgary arts community. He is the director of the Alberta Canola Growers Commission. Chitwood joins realtor Mauri Stiff as the second candidate from Airdrie. Cochrane has three candidates: town councillor Morgan Nagel, businessman Peter Guthrie and registered nurse Laura Talsma. Learn more at ianchitwood.com.
