You need protein in every meal to stay healthy and full and thankfully, these days there are many alternatives to meat protein. These new options are easy to get at your local grocery store.

Plant-based proteins to try

Even if you don’t want to go vegan or vegetarian full time, it is easy to reduce meat consumption or change up your dinner routine by trying these healthy plant-based alternatives.

  • Tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Edamame
  • Seitan
  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Nutritional yeast

  • Wild rice
  • Chia seeds
  • Nuts, nut butters, and other seed butters

  • Mycoprotein

The veggie “meat” industry

These days veggie “meat” products have gotten so much better, and are made up of many different plant-based proteins (not just soy) to give you the nutrients you need, all with a great taste. For those looking to help reduce their reliance on animal protein, or that find eating meat unethical, the newest generation of veggie “meats” allows choice and convivence.

Another way to include more of these plant-based proteins in your diet while also eating healthier is to choose these options when dining out. Many fast food places now include Beyond Meat, plant crumbles, etc. right alongside their animal protein options.

Give it a try!

Unlike in the past when your best option for avoiding animal protein was only tofu, today there are a wide variety of protein-forward, plant-based options that can be safely and very conveniently incorporated into your diet whether or not you are a meat eater, vegetarian or vegan. Try some of those options today. You may be pleasantly surprised.
