Pros and Cons of Meal Delivery Options for Seniors

Seniors turn to meal delivery for a variety of reasons including but not limited to, convenience, ability to budget consistently for meals, limited mobility (difficulty cooking or getting to the grocery store) and limited access to transportation.

However you choose to get your meals on the table, there are several ways to get balanced, delicious meals whether or not income or mobility is an issue.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of various meal delivery options for seniors.

Food Delivery Apps

Pros: SkipTheDishes and other food delivery apps allow seniors to enjoy a wide range of delicious foods from their favourite locations.

Cons: As with everyone that uses these convenient apps, self control and discretion is required to make healthy choices and to not overspend. Additionally, service can be slow at peak times, or not available in rural areas.

Meals on Wheels

Pros: This is a service widely available across Alberta from major centres like Edmonton to smaller towns like Sundre. Meals on Wheels uses a sliding scale to ensure those on limited income can access the program. The food is delicious and provides balanced nutrition. Depending on pandemic restrictions and the individual client wishes, the food drop off can also include a quick hello at the door. For some more isolated seniors, this “check in” also serves as human interaction and helps ease loneliness.

Cons: There really is no downside to Meals on Wheels. This program has been in operation for decades and provides many, not just seniors, with reliable access to hot, healthy meals.

Grocery Store Food Delivery

Pros: Many grocery stores will do the shopping for you and deliver to the door, or to the parking lot where they will place the items in your trunk. This is a great option for seniors that want to prepare their own meals. Same day delivery is possible.

Cons: Seniors living outside of major urban centres may not be eligible for delivery.

Independent Services

Pros: A variety of independent or private services provide food delivery for seniors, including Harmony Caregiving and Heart to Home Meals.

Cons: Service and costs vary by location.

Choice Means Meals Your Way

A variety of options means seniors can eat from their favourite restaurants, have groceries or deli items delivered, or rely on the long-standing service of Meals on Wheels. Whatever is chosen, there is a way to get balanced, delicious meals whether or not income or mobility is an issue.
