CLYDE – A Sunday-morning fire at a trailer on the east side of the Village of Clyde has left a man dead.
The Clyde Fire Department got the call around 9:30 a.m. Dec. 8, and were joined by Busby and Pickardville firefighters. RCMP and EMS also responded, while ATCO crews were on scene to deal with the natural gas lines to the home.
According to an RCMP press release, another person was inside the home and managed to get out safely, but couldn’t help the other out despite efforts.
Westlock County fire chief John Biro said on scene that some oxygen tanks that were inside the home for medical use had exploded earlier that morning — Clyde fire chief James Hoetmer confirmed that the explosion was likely from the oxygen tanks.
However, the cause of the fire has not been determined yet and the investigation won’t conclude for at least another week. According to an RCMP release the cause of the fire is not suspicious.
“At this point in time, I don’t want to say much else,” added Hoetmer.
Clyde firefighters didn’t clear the scene until close to 6 p.m. that night.
“We had to do a little extra work there to put out hot spots ... digging around and cutting in,” said Hoetmer.
