Nestled in the forest, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountain foothills is the small Hamlet of Bragg Creek, where you will find SunCatchers Design Studio, The River Dragonfly, and The Bee. Located on the corner of Burntall and White, an inviting cluster of buildings create a sanctuary for arts and craft. At its heart is Elizabeth Hertz, a long time stained glass artist and her partner Rod. SunCatchers, the glass studio, has been in business since 1979.
The newest addition is “The Bee,” a gorgeous and comfortable BnB suite. This contemporary space features hand painted heated floors, a ground level private entrance and easy access to all the amenities that Bragg Creek has to offer. Walk a block to one of many wonderful restaurants, pubs, and shops or wander down to the Elbow River. Hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-biking in West Bragg Creek and Kananaskis Country are 15 minutes away by car. Two 18 hole golf courses are only 10 minus away. It’s a 35 minute drive to downtown Calgary and 55 minutes to the airport. Banff and Canmore are only an hour away.
SunCatchers Design Studio is the reflection of Elizabeth’s long time passion for stained glass. The studio serves to teach those with the desire to learn glass in small groups – close to the beautiful and inspiring woods. Elizabeth has taught for Banff Leisure Learning and Calgary Leisure Learning and in her own studio over the last 42 years.
Stained glass is a living art form as it changes in the light throughout the day. Not only does the glass itself seem to change, whatever it lights up will change, too. “To create is in my blood and my soul,” Elizabeth states. “We need to expand our artistic horizons and stretch our creative limits. Every day is a new day to explore design and colour in the world around us. I have drawn and been drawn to art for as long as I can remember. Colour and line intrigue me. This world of details and colour gives me joy. There are layers of art in the world - in a stream - in a sky - and we are so blessed to be exposed to its beauty every day. We are fortunate to be able to interpret it in so many art forms - to create wonder and solace for others.” Elizabeth also paints on canvas and creates “Art Floors.”
Next door to Suncatchers is The River Dragonfly, a small store with a big heart. You are invited to linger and enjoy an ever changing offering of decorative art objects, blown glass from Canadian artists, other handcrafted items, women’s clothing, an eclectic collection of new and vintage jewellery, and antiques. The outdoor courtyard next to the shop features a wide selection of garden decor items. Wind spinners, wind chimes, garden stakes, and solar stakes abound.
