The Chinook Film Group’s February pick is by a director more known for his satirical take on current events rather than as a serious filmmaker.

On Feb. 18, the group will be screening Rosewater, a film written and directed by The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart. The film is based on the memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival by Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari, with Aimee Molloy.

Murray Mitchell, the programmer of the film group, said that one of the reasons they chose the film was for the Canadian connection.

“In the reviews they say it is an extremely respectable piece of work from a first time director,” said Mitchell, who added that it was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2009, Bahari travelled to Iran and smuggled footage of riots to the BBC. He was then arrested by the Revolutionary Guard and interrogated and tortured for 118 days.

Another Canadian connection is that Bahari did an interview with Canadian Jason Jones from The Daily Show, which was eventually used as evidence by Iran that Bahari was a spy with the American government and CIA.

Mitchell pointed out that they would be doing something a bit new this month in terms of ticket distribution. They will have 50 tickets available at Java Jamboree and 50 tickets available at Tea & Other Things, leaving 65 tickets at the door. “What we’re thinking is people that live farther away, if they can’t get a pre-ticket, they will know that there are still lots at the door,” he said.

Tickets are $10 and the movie starts at 7 p.m. at the Cochrane MovieHouse.
