The Cochrane Camera Club will be hosting its bi-annual photo show and sale May 4 at the Cochrane Alliance Church.

The Camera Club hosted its first show and sale in November of this year and plan to continue to host them bi-annually. The club wanted to let the community know that there are very talented photographer's living in Cochrane who want to show off their work.

At the November show, the club started out with 13 photographers, and have jumped to 22 at this most recent event. There will be photographs from all over the world – Asia, Australia, Africa, Iceland and Europe with lots from around Alberta as well. The photography club has outings once a month where they have gone to Abraham Lake to capture the methane bubbles, to Vermilion lakes to capture a cold morning sunrise, to Frank lake to photograph all types of birds, to Rowley to capture the past of Alberta and everything in between. All of these photos will be featured in the event.

One of the many local photographers Jackie Harbidge said she fell in love with photography when she was looking for a hobby during her time at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). She believes it is important for the group participating to gain some exposure from people in the community who may find interest in these types of events.

"These events are important to myself and everyone else in the club because it gets your name out in the community, and it’s a place to show photos to people who have interest in photography and may have an interest in my work," Harbidge said.

"It is important (for the community of Cochrane) to attend because everyone gets to know the community, it’s a fun way to see different work, different photographers and share in the experience and may be find something they will love and admire."

Harbridge said most of the photographs that will be on display at the event should appeal to everyone while also highlighting her favourite piece.

"As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Often a well-balanced picture will have many aspects, many of which may appeal to different individuals, as we all see what appeals to us the most," said Harbidge of her work. "My favourite is a picture I took at Johnson Canyon.  It was the fall where a vintage car was parked by the old gas pump. I was eventually able to get the picture framed with the mountains in the background. Then I printed it in black and white on a  metal base to give that old time feel when things were a bit simpler."

Harbidge said the club is a great way for those interested in photography to sharpen their skills and try new things

"It is a great way to hear great speakers on a full range of topics," Harbidge said. "There are outings to various locations you might not think about. Everyone shares their thoughts and expertise. Great way to learn new things whether you are young or old, a beginner or expert at photography, there is always something to learn."

The free event will start at 10 a.m. and will finish at 3:30 p.m.
