What is yacht rock, you may ask.

Well, we wondered that same question. Luckily 70s-inspired-yacht rock band Until Red was coming to town, so we asked them, and a few other things. The cheery trio from Brandon, Man. will bring their own brand of joyful and energetic styling to Legacy Guitar & Coffee House Friday, March 27.

Eagle: First off, have to ask, what really is ‘70s inspired yacht rock?

Until Red: Basically, our music is very ‘70s inspired: big hooks, catchy choruses, groovy grooves, fat harmonies, and lots of fun! ‘70s-inspired yacht rock is just something we made up.

Eagle: What’s the story behind your name?

Until Red: Ah, our name. Well, we’ve never liked our name we made when we were 14 years old about to play our first “big” show at the Brandon Winter Fair. They just really needed a name, so we went on an online band name generator and picked one. We’ve always wanted to change it, but never have.

Eagle: So how did Until Red come to be? And was there a specific moment when you realized that the band was what you all wanted to do?

Until Red: September was when we officially hit the road; we were all in school before that and trying to play two to three times a week was too much. So, we decided to give it all we’ve got for the next couple years and see where we end up.

Eagle: How would you characterize the creative dynamic between you three?

Until Red: It’s a very collaborative process with many of the initial ideas coming from our lead sing and guitarist Dylan MacDonald. Until Red’s sound is decidedly upbeat, high spirited and not even a little bit angst ridden. Almost like it’s a conscious rebuttal to the gloom and daily drudgery.

Eagle: Is there conscious effort to imbue your songs with that cheer to counteract the doldrums or is it just an organic, inherent quality of your music?

Until Red: You’re right, we’re pretty happy, relaxed people...most of the time! It’s definitely an organic quality of our music. We’re happy people; we make feel good music for everyone.

Eagle: How has the road been so far?

Until Red: The road has been good. We have played a ton of great shows. We love the fan connection and we love playing as much as we possibly can.

Eagle: On your website, it says you do house concerts. In the face of the increasing digital divide between artists and audiences, are house concerts a way of trying to reach out to fans and revive a much more direct experience?

Until Red: Absolutely. We love house concerts. They are such a great way to make fans and friends, and it’s always a great time for anyone who comes. Hey Cochrane: want to have a house concert? We’d love to do it!

Eagle: Anyone you’ve been itching to play with/tour with?

Until Red: We would love to tour with The Bros. Landreth. Joey (guitar player) played on our new record and we consult with them on the business side of things all the time. We love their music, and would love to tour with them!

Eagle: What can people expect for your show at the Legacy Guitar & Coffee House March 27?

Until Red: You will have an amazing time. Our tunes are lovable, our banter is funny and we really want to meet you. We’ve never had anyone come away from our show with a frown on their face.

Tickets to Until Red’s show in Cochrane can be purchased at untilred.zoobis.com.
