Carbon Levy is not the monster propaganda makes it

Much of the dissatisfaction in the current political environment, revolves around the Federal Carbon Legislation, and Alberta's Carbon Levy.

Much of the dissatisfaction in the current political environment, revolves around the Federal Carbon Legislation, and Alberta's Carbon Levy.

Let me remind voters that Albertans enjoy no sales tax, no harmonized tax, no payroll tax, and no health premiums, and we have the lowest corporate tax, and the lowest small business tax in the country. Also of note is that despite two years of low oil prices, and the Fort McMurray wildfire, we have the highest projected GDP growth in the country.

There is an economic dissonance between demanding the lowest taxes in the country, and simultaneously expecting the best public services.

As far as the Carbon Levy goes, it was implemented to create jobs at a time of high unemployment, provide seed money for economic diversification in green energy, fund innovation, and increase efficiencies in energy use.

The tax was introduced as "revenue neutral." Individuals with incomes less than $47,500 are fully rebated. Families with incomes less than $95,000 are also fully rebated. Sixty per cent of Alberta households are fully rebated.
