Cobras clean up at league awards

The offensive juggernaut of Kyle Moortgat and Cody Stevens were recognized by the Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) as top high school football players in the league at its year-end banquet Nov. 26 in Springbank.

The offensive juggernaut of Kyle Moortgat and Cody Stevens were recognized by the Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) as top high school football players in the league at its year-end banquet Nov. 26 in Springbank.

Stevens, the Cochrane High School Cobras Grade 11 quarterback, and senior receiver Moortgat connected for an average of two touchdowns per game over the RVSA regular season. Moortgat was named the RVSA’s most valuable player and Stevens the best offensive player.

Twelve other Cobras were recognized by the league for their outstanding play.

Senior Dale Cummings was named the league’s best offensive lineman, Justin Mount the best offensive back, Matt Pipa best linebacker and senior quarterback Kelton Beach claimed the heart award. Carson Gogol, Garrett Wilton, Mac Chaisson, Scott MacMillan, Aidan Smith, Graydon Verner, Nik Noseworthy and Logan Smith were all named league all-stars.

The Cobras finished undefeated (5-0) in RVSA play this season before being ousted from Tier 3 provincial high-school playoff play by the Cardston Cougars. Cochrane High also handed out its team awards at the school’s Dec. 1 football banquet, with the list of recipients mirroring the league awards.

SPRINGBANK PHOENIX

Springbank Community High School Phoenix Micah Teitz was named RVSA’s top defensive player at the league’s annual awards banquet. The senior linebacker was a force for the Phoenix, who finished 3-2 in league play this season, claiming silver in the league’s Tier 2 division title match against Airdrie’s George McDougall. Kevin Demmers was named the league’s top special-teams player, returning kickoffs and punts this season. He was also a terror alongside Teitz at linebacker and ran the ball effectively on offence as well. Phoenix defensive backs Cam Brennan and Max Fieldstone, offensive lineman Mathew Rowland and lineman Parker Gosse were selected as league all-stars.

BOW VALLEY BOBCATS

Jess Smyke, Jon Hillier, Scott Haigh, Luke Edey and Quinton Peers were all named RVSA all-stars.
