Local contractors let resident down

I am a local resident recently returning from eight years away from Canada. Over the past months I have been observing the changes in our community.

Upon returning to Cochrane our home, which had been rented, was in need of repair. In restoring our home we have endured the trial and error process of vetting various contractors and learning from the results.

We have tried very hard to stay with local contractors here in Cochrane, but it has proven very frustrating with the exceptionally poor level of service quality. There appears to be no commitment of family we had come to expect from living in a small community.

On many instances we were given commitments from local contractors only to have them simply not show up. Most recently we suffered an issue with the loss of shingles from our home during high winds in October. I contacted two local contractors who eagerly committed to attend to the problem promptly, but neither did respond. A third contractor was noble in responding to the emergency. They communicated a time to provide a permanent repair, but once again failed to show.

To be clear, there are many positive things to celebrate about living in Cochrane; however, I am fast learning that working with the local trades contractors is not one. I wonder if we are really hurting as bad as a local economy? Have contractors they lost their sense of commitment to serving the community in which they live and the common decency in treating their customers fairly.

If anyone is interested I still need my roof fixed.
