Reader concerned for future of Cremona and area

Dear Editor:

As a resident of Water Valley, I can’t comment too much about Cremona’s CAO Terry Lofstrom’s resignation.

However, Cremona’s former mayor, Leslie Abrams, and former councillor, Melinda Whittle, made a lot of controversial decisions, which affected Water Valley residents like me.

I can certainly understand why Cremona residents might feel disenfranchised. Councillor Whittle’s media comments about putting “principles before personalities” caught me by surprise and left me speechless. Upon reflection, her comments make sense to me.

For example, Cremona council and the fire department confidently made the decision to withdraw their fire protection services for Water Valley and operate their own fire department independently in one year’s time. We rural residents outside of Cremona, including Water Valley, currently pay 80 per cent of Cremona’s fire department’s budget.

If Alberta Municipal Affairs allows another council to continue, what steps will be taken to prevent this dysfunction from happening again? I for one don’t want my safety to be put at risk because of the actions of three people on Cremona council.

It is really the Cremona residents who are going to pay the price for all that has transpired.
