Dear Editor:

Before the Cochrane & Area Events Society (CAES) there was no WinterFest or SummerFest or anything like it, and the Labour Day parade was in limbo — with no one willing to take it on and meet the new demands for legal organization from the insurance world.

People often wonder why the seven of us bother with all the work and bother of putting on big community festivals. There are a few reasons…

1. We do what we do because we believe that private citizens can almost always do more with less than government can;

2. We do what we do because prior to us, this region did not have a full day, broad-range family festival, and;

3. We do what we do because we not only believe in the importance of building community, we act on it. Whether it’s bringing the Princess Posse out from Nakoda School or involving a bunch of schools in everything from snowman decorating to maze designing, CAES’ blood runs community.

Lastly, there is an impression out there that SummerFest, WinterFest and the Labour Day Parade are somehow produced by the town. We love Cochrane but we hope you know that we are entirely separate from the town.
