Turbine has hidden danger

Dear Editor:

The Dec 12 Eagle carried some details about the Wind Turbine proposed by Cochrane High School and local residents in opposition.

I endorse the desires of the students to conserve energy by exploring alternative energy sources, including wind energy.

Over 20 years ago, in concert with the Cardston School Board and provincial government, we (my former architectural company) promoted an experimental application of two large wind turbines on the site of the middle school.

Everything went very well for a few years, but the wind turbines were not properly maintained and during a high wind one of the propeller blades failed, destroying the turbine. The blade was found over one kilometre from the site. The turbines were promptly dismantled, never again to be operated at the school.

What would have been the consequences if the event happened during school hours and the blade penetrated the roof or was propelled into the exterior playground?

If the proposed wind turbine is placed on site as proposed, I suggest that everyone associated with this venture think very carefully about the consequences of a mechanical or structural failure and the potential for physical injury or worse to students and residents.
