WATER VALLEY— On Tuesday (May 25) at approximately 7 p.m., Alberta Fish and Wildlife received a call from RCMP regarding what appears to be a fatal bear attack on private property at a residence southwest of Water Valley.
The deceased individual went for a walk on their property and was later found on one of their trails.
Fish and Wildlife officers are currently conducting an investigation of the incident and have set up traps in the vicinity of the attack.
Officers are still working to determine the identity of the bear, but noted that a grizzly bear and a cub were seen in the vicinity of the incident.
During that sighting the sow was exhibiting aggressive behaviour.
Alberta Fish and Wildlife want to remind individuals that it is extremely important to be cognizant of potential animals when travelling outside.
When spending time outside it is recommended that people travel in groups, and bring animal deterrents, such as bear spray and noise makers.
If you encounter a bear, stay calm, back away, stay close to your group and seek safety, like a car or building.
