An area contractor is under investigation for allegedly defrauding at least nine families of an estimated combined $500,000 over the past year-and-a-half.

Kieron Warren operates KREATE Cabinets. He is accused of leaving homes in a gutted state in several Calgary-area communities, including Okotoks, Springbank and Redwood Meadows.

Warren has been a resident of Redwood Meadows for the past year. He moved to the townsite from Springbank.

At least five of those families have filed complaints with Services Alberta under the province’s Fair Trading Act, which states only licensed contractors are allowed to accept prepayment for work before it has been completed.

Other families are expected to file charges in the coming days.

Under the act, clients can ask for a full refund upon cancelling a contract and contractors must repay the amount in full within 15 days.

Warren is also scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 2 on similar charges from 2007 and 2008, when he operated under the business name Hillcrest Renovations.

Warren has pled guilty to five charges: three counts of operating as a prepaid contractor without a licence and two counts of failing to provide a refund after a customer cancelled a contract.

One of Warren’s alleged victims lost $150,000 for work paid for but not completed on their Chestermere home.

“I think it would have been easier if Kieron Warren had just taken our money and not touched the house, but now we still had to pay to have it done, which cost us now about $60,000,” said Janine Boldon, a Calgary school teacher who lives in Okotoks.

Diana and Gary Braine of Springbank lost an estimated $30,000. They hired Warren in the fall of 2011.

“Where in the world did all the money go if this has been going on for years, ” Diane wondered.

“And why isn’t this man in jail?”
