Cochrane Community Awards reveals names of nominees

Nominees for the 2013 Cochrane Community Awards have been announced, and the list is extensive, with an array of 32 residents, businesses and schools up for one of 12 pieces of hardware.

Nominees for the 2013 Cochrane Community Awards have been announced, and the list is extensive, with an array of 32 residents, businesses and schools up for one of 12 pieces of hardware.

The Community Awards are presented to those who represent and make a difference in Cochrane. A committee of local representatives that include educators, seniors, businesses, sustainability champions, the Cochrane and District Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Cochrane, oversees the awards.

Categories included Employer of the Year, Newsmaker of the Year and 2013’s highest honour, Mayor and Council’s Order of Cochrane, which last year went to Gordon Davies, president of the Cochrane Historical Archival Preservation Society.

Laurie Drukier, communications advisor for the Town of Cochrane, said which category nominees have been selected for is not revealed until the awards are handed out.

This year’s nominations had to be submitted by April 12, with the awards ceremony May 26 at the Cochrane RancheHouse.

Emceeing the event will be CBC News Calgary host Carla Beynon.

The 2013 nominees are as follows: Addie’s Creative Fabrics (Janet Byl), Alberta Health Services (Home Care; Della Robertson), Barbara Archer, Back in the Saddle, Glen Boles, Canadian Tire, Mollie Casselton, Cochrane Activettes, Cochrane High School Sustainable Development Committee (wind turbine initiative), Cochrane Home Treasures, Steve and Del Edwards, Kathy Fenton, Tim Giese, Lydia Graham, Green King, Michael LaPorte, Dorothy Margeson, Danica Marks, Valerie McCracken, J.P. McCool, Mandy Mozel, Lawson Parker, Martin Parnell, Sandra Robin, Skyview Bed & Breakfast, Margaret Sletten, Judy Stewart, Mona Sylvestre, Lucy Tallman, Brooks Tower, Town of Cochrane and Margaret Whitlock.

Tickets to the Community Awards ceremony are available for $25 (adults) and $10 (children) until May 18 at Bentleys Books, Cochrane IGA and the RancheHouse.
