The annual RCMP Mayor's Report, presented to Town Council at the July 13 regular council meeting, confirmed Cochrane's spot as the 25th safest place to live in Canada.

COCHRANE— An official RCMP report has confirmed Cochrane’s spot as the 25th safest place to live in Canada.

Each year the RCMP provides a report on prior-year crime statistics and activities to Town Council.

Historically the report coincides with RCMP’s fiscal year-end, but this year’s report was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cochrane Town Council heard the report detailing the crime statistics in 2019 at the regular council meeting on Monday (July 13).

The report states that the Cochrane Municipal Detachment generated 7,031 files, which includes calls for service from the public, self-generated, and proactive files. That figure represents an increase of 6.2 per cent from 2018, which saw a total of 6,619 reports generated.

The report also notes that the local RCMP detachment’s most challenging crimes to solve are property offences, largely due to the offenders being transients, who disappear, or leave town, quickly after they commit a crime.

The report states that Cochrane’s crime trends are in line with provincial trends.

“Crime Statistics within Cochrane for 2019 remain comparable to the 6-year average with a trending decrease of total Criminal Code Offences of 13 per cent. These stats are confirmation of the MacLean’s article which placed Cochrane at 212/237 as one of the safest places to live in Canada,” says the report.
