Cochrane in Brief

Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge turns blue

On Monday (Jan. 4) the Town of Cochrane announced that the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge would be lit in blue light following the death of Calgary Police Service member Sgt. Andrew Harnett. Thirty-seven-year-old Harnett served 12 years with the Calgary Police Service and lost his life while in the line of duty on New Year’s Eve. Two arrests have been made in connection with the much-mourned officer’s death. Mayor Jeff Genung in a statement said he hopes that the blue light on the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge will serve as a reminder of the dangerous situations that first responders put themselves in on behalf of the public.

Cochrane Food Bank Resumes Services

The Cochrane Food Bank, operated by the Cochrane Activettes, resumed its regular programming on Monday (Jan. 4) after a brief pause in its services over the holidays. If you need a food hamper, you are asked to contact Family and Community Support Services at 403-851-2250 and speak to a community resource officer. Food hampers for the current week must be requested by 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday. The food hamper can be picked up at the Cochrane Activettes Food Bank at 30 Griffin Industrial Point, Bay 4.

Students return to classes

Students across the province are set to head back to classrooms on Monday (Jan. 11) following an announcement from Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange. Students in the province who opted for in-person classes at the onset of the school year have been attending classes online since the end of November in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. LaGrange took to Twitter on Monday (Jan. 4) to make the announcement, thanking teachers, support staff, parents and students for their hard work and dedication to student safety and learning throughout the pandemic.
