Cochrane in Brief, Nov. 19

Cochrane in Brief

Bragg Creek power line maintenance

Fortis will be conducting maintenance on a number of power lines on Balsam Avenue between Burnside Drive and River Drive in Rocky View County. The work is expected to begin on Thursday (Nov. 19) and continue until Monday (Nov. 23). Fortis will be replacing overhead power lines and power poles along Balsam Avenue. The work will require the closure of one lane, and workers will direct alternating traffic, but only minor delays are expected in the area during the time of construction. Posted signage and flaggers will be on location and drivers are advised to proceed with caution through the construction area. And questions or concerns about the project can be directed to Fortis area coordinator Dan Clarke at 403-514-4179.

Winter Clothing Drive

The Association of Mexicans in Calgary is hosting a Winter Clothing Drive to support migrant farmworkers in Alberta. Every year in January, thousands of migrant seasonal workers arrive in the province and work hard to produce the food that sustains local communities. The Association will be collecting winter clothing from November 2020 to January 2021 to supply the workers with the clothes they need to stay warm in the harsh winter months. You can help by donating gently used men's jackets, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, ear warmers or socks. Contact the Association of Mexicans in Calgary by email at [email protected], by phone at 403-602-7396, or by sending a message to their Facebook Page, Asociación de Mexicanos en Calgary.

Hair of the Dog

The Cochrane and Area Humane Society is hosting its first-ever online silent auction from Nov. 20 to 27. The Hair of the Dog online auction will help cover the costs of food, supplies, medical procedures and more. The popular fundraiser was originally planned for April but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For more details about the fundraiser contact the Cochrane and Area Humane Society by phone at (403) 932-2072, or by email at [email protected].
