Cochrane in Brief

Calling all Writers

The Cochrane Public Library is hosting a spooky writing competition. Open to all ages, the library is looking for spooky story submissions to help celebrate the Halloween season. Submit a fictional story, an informational report, or a poem to enter to win one of four author-signed copies of Canadian ghost stories. Up for grabs is Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan 3 by Jo-Anne Christensen, Journeys into the Unknown by Richard Palmisano, Haunted Canada 10 by Joel A. Sutherland, and Haunted Canada: The Second Terrifying Collection by Joel A. Sutherland. All entries must be handed in before Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Winners will be announced on Oct. 30.

Walking Through Grief

The Cochrane Hospice Society is hosting weekly support sessions to help those who have experienced loss cope with the feelings of grief. Walking through Grief and Loss are weekly, 45-minute walks along the beautiful walking trails around Cochrane. The group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. until late October and departs from the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. The organizers have noted on the Cochrane Hospice Society’s Facebook page that the group is not a therapeutic group, but rather an opportunity to experience a nature walk among individuals who are on a similar journey. Social distancing measures are in place and the use of masks is encouraged.

Pruning and Permaculture

On Oct. 4, Cochrane Tree Care is hosting a Pruning and Permaculture event with support from the Backyard Harvest Project. The event will be a DIY focused discussion on pruning and permaculture landscaping, a set of design principles centred on utilizing some of the patterns and resilient features recognized in natural ecosystems. There will be a demonstration and question and answer period included. It will also feature a local permaculture garden in the making. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Cultivate Cochrane for their community greenhouse initiative. Check out Cochrane Tree Care’s social media channels for more details.
