Winter brings with it an increase in intersection-related collisions.

Cochrane RCMP and Cochrane Municipal Enforcement Services are reminding motorists to take extra time when travelling on Cochrane and area roads and give additional room to brake at intersections.

On average, 65 people are killed and 8,024 people are injured at intersections each year in the province of Alberta. More than 95 per cent of these collisions occur in urban areas.

Cochrane RCMP and Municipal Enforcement Services will be out ensuring that drivers are following these important traffic laws. Failure to stop at a stop sign and/or a red light marked intersection may result in a $388 fine and three demerit points.

At a stop sign and/or red light, drivers are required to come to a complete stop, which means the wheels of the vehicle must not be moving, before proceeding safely through the intersection. This complete stop gives drivers the opportunity to look for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, or cyclists.
