ROCKY VIEW COUNTY— The Cochrane RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in its hunt for an individual suspected of breaking into the Edge School for Athletes in the Springbank area at approximately 2 a.m. on June 6.

The individual was inside the building until roughly 6 a.m. when he was spotted by a faculty member leaving the school in beige or tan Jeep.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff with the Cochrane RCMP said the individual may have stolen several items from the dance studio area in the school.

“The male did steal several things from the store, mostly items that were taken from the dance studio area,” he said. “We’re looking at higher valued costumes from the studio.”

Savinkoff said there was “continuous” video surveillance of the individual’s activities while he was in the school, which led investigators to believe that the suspect had prior knowledge of the facility and may have been there previously.

“It appears he went into the school for a pretty specific purpose, that physically had to do with the dance studio area,” Savinkoff said. “He seemed to have some knowledge of exactly where to go and what he was looking for.”

Savinkoff said that he is unsure of the individual’s motivation for the break and enter, but does not believe that it was financial.

“Quite often we do get break and enters that do have other intentions. Sometime alcohol or drugs or some other things can influence somebody’s behaviour to the point where it’s a little bit unclear why somebody might do something,” he said. “In this particular case I’m not convinced that it was a financial motivation. I think he went there with some particular ideas and wanted specific items out of that studio.”

Savinkoff noted the estimated amount of the items stolen is somewhere in the ballpark of $2,000.
