STONEY NAKODA— One man is dead following a serious collision Friday (March 12) afternoon near Highway 1.

Cochrane RCMP responded to reports of a single-car accident near Morely at approximately 10 a.m.

A man who investigators believe was the driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident after he was ejected from the vehicle.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff with the Cochrane RCMP said a local resident discovered the vehicle in one of his fields and called the police.

“We received a call from a local resident that had come across a vehicle in one of his fields adjacent to Highway 1. Our officers attended and located a vehicle that had clearly been in a roll-over collision and had driven off Highway 1. Unfortunately, there was a deceased male outside of the vehicle,” he said.

At this time, Savinkoff said, the RCMP is still putting together the timeframe of how and when the vehicle ended up where it did.

To do that, he said, Cochrane RCMP brought in a collision reconstructionist.

“He looks at various things like skid marks on the roadway, if there are any, he’ll measure the distance travelled. He has lots of different data that he can utilize to try to give us an idea of what direction the vehicle was travelling, how fast it might have been going, and give us an idea of exactly what might have took place that caused the vehicle to go off the road,” Savinkoff said.

To perform the analysis Cochrane RCMP shut down westbound traffic between Morely Road and Ozada Road.

Traffic flow has since resumed, but motorists are asked to be aware of emergency personnel in proximity of Highway 1 and reduce their speed accordingly.

No further interruptions of traffic are anticipated.
