COCHRANE— Cochrane RCMP received a call regarding a hit and run collision with a pedestrian at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 5) turning north onto Fifth Avenue from the McDonald's parking lot.

“Officers attended and we were able to locate the vehicle and the driver,” said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. He added that a witness was able to provide a licence plate number aiding in the investigation.

Jamie-Lee Parkin witnessed the event. Parkin said she was behind the truck in the McDonalds drive-through before the accident occurred.

Parkin alleged the driver of a blue GMC 2500 hit a young girl riding her bicycle across the entrance to the parking lot, stopped momentarily, and then continued on, fleeing the scene.

“She went to turn the corner, but didn’t stop,” she said. “The little girl on the bike was standing there waiting and then proceeded to cross the street heading south. Then the lady just started moving with the little girl in the middle of the road.”

The truck struck the young girl, who was thrown from her bicycle and then ran over the bike.

That’s when Parkin said she honked her horn to get the woman’s attention.

“At first I just said ‘well maybe she didn’t see her,’” Parkin said. “I drive a lifted truck too, and obviously that’s never happened but sometimes you don’t see certain things, so maybe she just missed it. But, I honked and she looked back, and it was obvious, but she just left.”

Parkin called 911, and then she and another bystander checked on the young girl, who was a little shaken up, had a sore ankle, and some scrapes, but was otherwise OK.

“The little girl was super good, she was just a little scared,” she said.

Parkin noted that the young girl was already looking on the bright side of the accident before she left the scene.

“The little girl said ‘oh at least out of this I can get a new bike.’ She was a good sport,” Parkin said with a laugh. “She was so cute.”

The girl's injuries did not require a follow up with EMS.

Cochrane RCMP continues to investigate the incident. At this time they believe the driver may not have been aware the collision occurred.
