In Alberta, over the last 24 hours, 1,429 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified after the completion of 15,000 tests.

The provincial testing positivity rate sits at 9.4 per cent.

There are 340 COVID-related hospitalizations in the province, including 83 patients in intensive care.

An additional, three COVID-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. To date, 2,005 Albertans have died.

The province has administered 779,000 doses of the COVID-19.

Immunization clinics are now open for all birth years in Phase 2B, and starting Friday those between the ages of 55 and 64 can book AstraZeneca vaccines through Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Edmonton and participating pharmacies.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported 717 of the new cases identified in the province are variants. Variants currently represent 45 per cent of active COVID-19 cases in Alberta.

“We have now reached the point where the variants of concern are the dominant strains of new COVID-19 cases in our province,” Hinshaw said.

There are three variant strains of concern in Alberta— The variants first identified in the United Kingdom (UK), South Africa and Brazil.

The UK variant is the most common in Alberta, Hinshaw said, accounting for 99 per cent of confirmed variant cases.

“If you test positive you should assume you have the UK variant,” Hinshaw said.

Current evidence shows these variants are more transmittable than the earlier forms of COVID-19, Hinshaw said, and can cause more severe outcomes, including death, in some cases.

There are 12,187 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.
