Cochrane under Environment Canada heat warning

Environment Canada advises residents and visitors in the heat warned regions to take precautions to protect themselves, their families and neighbours from the effects of potential heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Cochrane area as of 10:36 a.m. this morning (July 27).

Temperature highs throughout the day will range from near 29 to mid-30s C, according to the weather authority alert. Overnight lows will range from near 14 C to the high teens. Similar temperatures can be expected throughout Thursday.

In some areas of southern Alberta, the heat may last into early next week.

Environment Canada advises residents and visitors in the heat warned regions to take precautions to protect themselves, their families and neighbours.

Some of the measures include drinking plenty of water throughout the day, rescheduling time spent outside to when its cooler, taking frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in a cooled indoor area, and ensuring children and pets are not left in a closed vehicle for any length of time.

To monitor symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, look for signs such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness.

"Pay particularly close attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more sever effects from heat including Infants, children, seniors and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated," reads the Environment Canada alert.

"Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion."

The area heat warning is also in effect for Airdrie, Sundre and Olds.
