A special winterr advisory is predicting the next three days to bring significant snow fall.

The first significant snowfall of the season is expected today through Monday for the Foothills and much of Southern Alberta.

Snow is forecast to begin falling along the central and northern foothills this morning spreading south and eastwards throughout the day. How far east the snow spreads remains uncertain at this time, however the highest accumulations are expected to remain along the foothills and Mountain Parks. Calgary will likely see precipitation transition to snow by this evening, with accumulations up to 5 cm by Sunday morning.

As the system moves south, upslope flow will enhance snowfall in the extreme southwest corner of the province and into Montana. Winter storm watches and snowfall warnings have been issued for these regions as total snowfall accumulations are expected to reach 30 to 50 cm by Monday.

On Sunday, heavy snowfall is expected to move eastward bringing 10 to 25 cm of snow to areas near to and south of the Highway 1 corridor. The highest snowfall accumulations are expected along the United States border where current indications suggest total snowfall could approach 30 cm.

Poor driving conditions throughout the weekend can be expected in southwestern Alberta, including portions of Highway 1 and the QEII.

This is expected to be a long duration event, with snow beginning this morning and tapering off by Monday. Temperatures are forecast to rebound into the low-mid teens by mid-week, making this brief brush with winter just that...brief.
