Following recommendations from Rocky View County’s (RVC) Oct. 12 Regional Recreation Board Meeting, RVC council unanimously approved funding for three projects at its regular meeting Oct. 29.

Council approved $80,000 in Community Recreation Regional funding for the Springbank Park For All Season’s (SPFAS) second phase of its waterline enhancement connection.

RVC recreation services coordinator Dari Lang said the facility began the first phase of installing a waterline earlier this year, and during construction hit rock, which increased the complexity of the project. Funds from RVC will be used to help complete the project, which is being cost-shared with SPFAS and Rocky View Schools. Council approved funding not to exceed $131,345 for the SPFAS to assist with costs incurred when the facility shutdown in October 2012 for more than two weeks due to complications with the ice plant. Lang said, as a result, there were damages to the electrical and brine line, and many other complications. RVC funds represent 50 per cent of the total cost remaining not covered by the SPFAS’s insurance.

Council approved $97,180 for the Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Park Society, pending the Town of Cochrane’s confirmation to contribute matching funds, which would match the county at 25 per cent of the total project cost. The society is contributing the remaining 50 per cent of the project cost.

The dollars would be used by the society to replace two ice machines that service four of the ice surfaces at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, which are nearing the end of their lifecycle, said Lang.
