COCHRANE—The second annual Cruise Cochrane Senior's Lodge Cruise has been postponed.
The event hosted by Cruise Cochrane was originally slated to take place on Saturday (May 8).
It was cancelled due to stringent public health measures announced by the provincial government on Tuesday (May 4).
A new date for the event has yet to be determined.
Organizer Jim Messner said the event is a celebration designed to honour seniors and staff at long-term care facilities.
“We’ll be honking our horns and we’ll all be waving at them,” Messner said. “It’s exciting.”
When the cruise takes place, it will begin at Cochrane GM the rides will wind down to Points West Living in Fireside, followed by Big Hill Lodge in the East End, to Grand Avenue Village before finishing off at Bethany Care.
“It’s about the folk in the lodges— The seniors, the nurses and their staff,” Messner said.
It remains essential to honour seniors and staff, he said, and the cruise will serve as a reminder the community still cherishes them and is thankful for them during the pandemic.
“Here we are into our second year and the seniors are in the same place looking out the window— Hopefully it brings them a smile and brightens up their day a bit,” Messner said.
Last year Cruise Cochrane expected to see around 50 cars participate in the first Seniors Lodge Cruise— Instead, they saw more than 100 participants hit the road to wish Cochrane’s seniors well.
This year Cruise Cochrane is prepared to see just as many rides in town and has created a registration event on Facebook and Eventbright.
Messner added participants should sign up for the newsletter on the Cruise Cochrane website to receive a map and directions for the cruise.
During the cruise, participants can use the app Zello. All announcements will appear on the app and provide information while they are sitting in their cars. Messner described it as a walkie-talkie for your cellphone.
