There’s March Madness and there’s the 4 on the Floor Diaper Derby. Either way, it makes for an interesting bracket.

Babies and toddlers between 0-24 months are invited to test their speed against each other at the third annual 4 on the Floor Diaper Derby, a family-friendly event hosted by Grand Avenue Pharmacy. The baby races will kick off the pharmacy’s baby week — a week of sales on merchandise for the wee ones.

The contenders will face off against each other in heats, travelling the length (about 10 feet) of a foam mat, said Reid Kimmett, a pharmacy representative. Well, at least some of the competitors will be travelling. Kimmett said some of the younger racers have been known to take a bit of a nap on the track.

The competitors will be divided into two divisions: crawlers and toddlers. Kelly Kimmett said that this year, a few derby veterans — two and three year olds — have been invited back to face off on the mat.

“It’s a unique event,” said Reid Kimmett. “You’re not gong to see anything else like this in Cochrane. The derby is always good for a few smiles and laughs.

“Having events like this really bonds families, store owners and the town. It helps to create a stronger community.”

Each young racer will receive a race package, complete with a number and a bit of free merchandise. As the launch of baby week, families can head into the pharmacy following the derby to score deals on baby clothes, accessories, along with other infant and toddler merchandise.

Trophies will be awarded in each of the divisions.

The Diaper Derby is still on the lookout for young racers. To enter, visit Grand Avenue Pharmacy or call 403-932-2500.
