An ex-Cochrane lawyer is spending two years in jail after obtaining more than $1 million in fake mortgages.

Nicola Alexandra Davis was sentenced Sept. 24 to 18 months for fraud and six months for theft. In addition, provincial court Judge Anne Brown placed Davis on probation for two years.

Davis must also perform 75 hours of community service and take psychological counselling.

In 2012, the former lawyer pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of obtaining credit by fraud. The transactions occurred between 2008 and 2009. Among her wrongdoings was the forging of her boyfriend’s late father’s signature in an effort to take ownership of the dead man’s Cochrane home.

The illegal sale was discovered in 2009.

At the time of the fraudulent transactions, the Law Society of Alberta suspended Davis from practising law. She was disbarred in 2011.
