Friday Findings at Stockmen's Memorial

By an act of the Alberta legislature, Stockmen's Memorial Foundation was established.
STOCKMENSBRAND
Stockmen's Memorial Foundation honorary brand.

Three exciting things, first it's Friday, second it's a long weekend and third another Friday find from Stockmen's Memorial Foundation ready to roll.

After a couple weeks of lingering in the hat department I've gone back to a brand selection. A honourary brand of none other than Stockmen's Memorial Foundation.

For those like myself who didn't know this, a honourary brand is just like a regular brand. They contain a character, or combination of characters, to denote ownership. It does not go on livestock. It is allotted to a person or company to promote the livestock industry.

In 1980 the Stockmen's Memorial Foundation was conceived after 50 founding members made up of ranchers, farmers and individuals wanted to honour the Canadian livestock industry.

The Alberta Department of Agriculture donated plenty of original brand documents and Stockmen's would be treated as a site that would preserve western heritage through collections of library materials and artifacts.

The objectives of the Foundation go as follows:

  • To identify, honour and remember the builders of the Alberta livestock industry and others who have made outstanding contributions to its progress.
  • To provide historical and business information relating to the Alberta livestock industry.
  • To familiarize the public with the lore of the livestock industry.
  • To encourage a general appreciation of the sociological and economic significance of the livestock industry.

On December 5, 1996 Stockmen's Memorial Foundation was presented with a honourary brand certificate from the Alberta Department of Agriculture. The honourary brand is read Running Bar S Hanging Left F.
