A vibrant new sculpture is attracting attention at the Cochrane RancheHouse.
The family of the late Gina McDougall Cohoe donated a metre-high bronze rearing colt titled "Future Champion" to the Town. The piece was created by McDougall Cohoe, an artist who spent almost 80 years of her life in the foothills of Alberta until her passing in May 2014.
The statue is on display in front of the Town reception desk, for now. It will be relocated to its permanent location at the future site of Cochrane's new transit hub when it opens.
McDougall Cohoe was a notable, top-selling bronze artist with prestigious commissions including more than 20 years of trophy bronzes for the Calgary Stampede for "All-Around Cowboy", "Tie Down Roping", "Bareback", "Novice Saddle Bronc" and others.
Her work can be found worldwide and in the private collections of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
McDougall Cohoe also barrel raced professionally for four years and earned one Alberta and two Canadian championships. In 1994, the Westerner Expo in Red Deer honoured McDougall Cohoe for her outstanding contributions to the world of rodeo. She was also awarded the 1999 Western Artist of the Year at Canada's Cowboy Festival in Calgary.
The Town of Cochrane is proud to display this sculpture that honours Alberta's proud western history.
