For Tracy Donst, representing the Cochrane and Area Humane Society (CAHS) in the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon’s Charity Challenge was an easy decision.

Having adopted three dogs from the local shelter, as well as serving as a staff member and volunteer with the organization, Donst knows the good the funds raised can accomplish. But to her, the Charity Challenge was like coming full circle.

“We adopted our first dog from the shelter about 10 years ago. He was an active dog and was the reason I started running,” said Donst, who will be running the Jugo Juice 10K during the May 26 event. “Besides companionship, the dog (Forrest, a collie mix) helped our family become more active and healthy.”

Donst will be one of more than 20 people representing the CAHS during the Charity Challenge, which will run as part of the Calgary Marathon at Stampede Park May 26.

While she’ll be looking to set a personal best in the 10K, other members of the CAHS team — aptly named Anything is Pawsible — for the Cochrane and Area Humane Society — will be divided between five events: the marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K walk and run and the kids marathon.

The CAHS is one of more than 60 organizations involved with this year’s charity event. Participating non-profits range from medical initiatives to children’s and women’s groups.

“While it’s inspiring to run for your own cause, it’s just as inspiring to see other people sweating it out for their own charities,” said Donst.

This is Donst’s second time representing the CAHS, but the group has been taking part in the annual event for three years, said Cheryl Wallach, spokesperson for the shelter.

Last year, the team raised more than $11,000. This year, Wallach said shelter representatives set the relatively humble goal of $8,500 — a goal they blew out of the water.

“Currently, they’ve raised just over $12,500,” said Wallach.

“This funding will go to cover shelter expenses — food, water, medical attention and behavioral rehabilitation.”
