A debate over whether the consumption of mass-produced meat should be curtailed and eventually eliminated is planned for the next session of Cochrane Ideas on tonight at 7 p.m. at King Solomon Lodge.

Organizers are calling it the Red Meat vs. The Greens debate. Two debaters will speak against meat consumption; two in support. Then discussion will be opened to audience participation on the following motion:

WHEREAS ever-increasing, world-wide mass meat production raises environmental concerns and also involves some ethical issues;

BE IT RESOLVED that we support a substantial reduction and the eventual elimination of mass-produced meat consumption.

Supporting the motion are Robin Slater from Lac des Arcs, a committed vegetarian for 50 years and an active participant in Ideas; and Heinz Unger, a retired engineer, former official with the World Bank and a long-time conservationist.

Opposing the motion will be Erik Butters, a well-known conservation-minded rancher, operating northwest of Cochrane, and currently serving as a Municipal District of Bighorn councillor. Joining him as second speaker against the motion will be Greg Trout of Cochrane, a professional engineer working in the mining and equipment maintenance field.

This will be the final event by Cochrane Ideas before a summer break. The group’s 20th year will start up in September. The organizing committee encourages discussions on a very broad range of topics. Any interested people are welcome to attend free of charge, although donations are welcome.
