Four days remain for aspiring council and mayoral candidates to toss their names into the fray of the Oct. 21 municipal election.

Sept. 23 is the deadline for candidates to officially put their name on the ballot, and if the number remains what it is now, Cochrane will have eight residents running for a seat on council – three incumbents; Ross Watson, Jeff Toews and Tara McFadden, and five first-timers; Dan Cunin, Gaynor Levisky, Jim Uffelmann, Shana Bruder and Morgan Nagel – and three for mayor – David Smith, Joann Churchill and Ivan Brooker.

With current councillors Churchill and Brooker running for mayor and Ivan Davies unable to run for another term due to a change of residence outside town limits, Cochrane residents are guaranteed to have at least three new councillors for the next cycle.

Rocky View Schools will also elect a new board of trustees this October.

Unlike years past, the 2013 election cycle will be a four-year term, no longer a three-year.

Cochrane polls will be open on election day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents who live north of Highway 1A or in GlenEagles will vote at the Cochrane RancheHouse; those East of Highway 22 and south of the 1A (except in GlenEagles) will cast their ballots at Frank Wills Memorial Hall; and Cochranites west of the 22 and south of the 1A will vote at Bow Valley Baptist Church, a new polling station this year.

An advance poll will be held at the RancheHouse Oct. 15 and 17 from 4-8 p.m. and Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special ballots can also be submitted.

Also new for 2013’s municipal election will be that those whose name is not on the list of electors must produce valid identification to vote.
