The Cochrane Public Library is reaching out to supporters to take part in Library Giving Day on Tuesday, April 4.

Started in 2019 by the Seattle Public Library, Library Giving Day is an international fundraising event where people can donate to help support their local library.

The campaign is a reminder that in addition to well-loved collections, the library also offers innovative programming, beginning with early readers through to seniors. This year the campaign is geared to Grow a Reader – supporting early literacy programs for children five years of age and younger within the community.

The Grow a Reader initiative will run from April 4 to April 9. During that time Cochranites are encouraged to make a donation and contribute a leaf to the library’s own Grandfather Tree – acknowledging the storied history of our community and the generations of children who have made it their home.

The donations and support of the community have so far enabled the library to move to a Fee and Fine Free model this year, but continued support is required to sustain the current growth trajectory.

Since January and February of last year, the Library has seen a 171 per cent increase in program participation. Library officials say community support to continue to provide superior early literacy programming is vital.

Cochranites can also show their support by purchasing a Cochrane Public Library logo book bag or donating through the library’s website at cochranepubliclibrary.ca.

The library is also currently looking for volunteers for the gardening club. More information is available on the website, under the Volunteers tab.
