Cochrane RCMP are reminding area motorists to keep their vehicles locked and to not leave them running unattended.

With the cold weather upon us RCMP recommends that motorists use an automatic car starter, limit the amount of time vehicles are left running, and to have vehicles secure at all times.

"It is typical to see an uptick in stolen vehicles at this time of year," says Corp. Troy Savinkoff of the Cochrane RCMP.

"Thieves often seek out easy opportunities. An unlocked running vehicle presents a very easy target."

Savinkoff says that one of the most effective tool in fight crime is being alert and calling in any suspicious behaviour.

"If we as a community take some simple steps to secure our property we not only protect our own property but we also discourage thieves from coming back to our community in the future," he said.
