It was an ugly scene as rescue workers tried to piece together the carnage that took place on May 25 along a stretch of Highway 8 near Springbank. The driver of a silver SUV died when his vehicle pulled into oncoming traffic, striking a semi trailer head-on.

Rocky View County saw two serious vehicle accidents near Springbank last week — one a fatal crash on Highway 8 and the other on Springbank Road, in which a child was left in life-threatening condition and seven other people injured.

The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee was killed as a result of a head-on crash with a tractor trailer at 12:46 p.m. May 25.

“We have eye-witness accounts that say a westbound moving SUV crossed the centre-line and came into the path of the semi,” said Cochrane RCMP Sgt. Dave Hardy.

While the name of the deceased has not been released it is known that he was an older male who was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

On May 26 at 5:32 p.m. a motor vehicle collision involving three vehicles and 10 people at the intersection of Springbank Road and Range Road 32 left eight people requiring medical attention.

A Toyota Sienna van carrying six occupants from Banff — four children and two adults — rolled onto its side trapping the occupants inside.

Two occupants of a Volkswagen Touareg walked away and two occupants of a Jeep Liberty were left injured.

RCMP said in a statement that the Toyota was traveling east on Springbank Road, the Volkswagen was traveling north on Range Road 32 and the Liberty was heading west on Springbank Road.

Several EMS units and a STARS helicopter were called to the scene.

One child in critical life-threatening condition was transferred by ground to hospital while three other children were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, one via STARS air ambulance.

Two adults were transported to Calgary in stable condition, while four adults were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The seven-year-old who was initially reported as being in life threatening condition is now listed as being in stable condition.

Neither alcohol or drugs are believed to have been factors in either collision.

No charges have been laid at this time and RCMP is investigating.
