Cochrane mayor Truper McBride has announced that he will not seek re-election in the next municipal election.

In addition to revealing his decision to a hand-selected choice of media outlets, McBride made this announcement via Twitter on the evening of April 2.

“As of October 28, 2013, I will be stepping down as mayor of Cochrane and chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP),” McBride wrote on Twitter.

First elected to council in 2001 at the age of 23, then elected as mayor in 2007 by just over 200 votes, McBride has been involved in municipal politics for 12 years.

During his time in the public eye, McBride endured two political losses at the federal and provincial levels; the first in 2000 when he ran for the federal Progressive Conservatives (PC) against Canadian Alliance MP Myron Thompson; the second being the race for the PC party nomination in the most recent provincial election, which he lost to Ron Casey, the current MLA for Banff-Cochrane.

McBride will also step down as chair of the CRP, a position he has held for several years.
