Qualico Communities Calgary has announced the purchase of Southbow Landing and their development plans for Cochrane's newest community.

Qualico Communities Calgary has recently announced the purchase of Southbow Landing and the development of the future community in Cochrane.

Located east of Highway 22, Southbow Landing is expected to be a 545-acre neighbourhood that will feature residential spaces, a large future commercial centre, views of the Bow River, and green spaces.

Manager of Marketing and customer care for Qualico Communities Calgary, Emily Smith, said the developer is very excited to share the announcement with the greater Cochrane community.

“Qualico Communities is very excited to be starting development of this amazing land in Cochrane,” Smith said in a company press release. “Southbow Landing is the ideal location for those who, in the near future, are looking to make a change in Cochrane or looking to make Cochrane home.”

Qualico Communities Calgary will be following a neighbourhood plan that was previously approved by Cochrane town council in the fall of 2015.

A ground-breaking for Southbow Landing is anticipated to take place later this year, with the first phase of construction to follow soon afterwards.

General manager, acquisitions and development for Qualico Communities Calgary Cary Kienitz expressed the same sentiment as Smith and looks forward to beginning the project.

“[This community] is going to have some really unique elements that haven’t been done in other communities,” Kienitz promised.

The new community is anticipated to be developed in approximately 15 phases. It will include three future school sites, over five kilometres of pathways, four parks, and extensive environmental reserve areas.

Southbow Landing’s proposed central commercial area will be the largest on the south side of Cochrane and aims to provide additional amenities for both future and current homeowners in Cochrane.

Additionally, the community will also provide easier access to Highway 22 for those travelling west to the Rocky Mountains or south to Bragg Creek.

Executive director of development and infrastructure services for the Town of Cochrane, Drew Hyndman said that Cochrane has long anticipating the development of Southbow Landing and the amenities it will provide residents in the future.

“New communities bring vibrancy through diverse housing options, new school sites and amenities that will serve all Cochrane residents,” Hyndman said. “The previously approved Neighbourhood Plan provides the foundation to build a connected community that embraces the existing natural landscape.

“Cochrane continues to guide sustainable development through a commitment to livability, open spaces, recreation, new business opportunities and connectivity.”

“Cochrane is already a great community – rich in beauty and history,” Smith said. “With beautiful homes, lots of green space, and future commercial and retail, Southbow Landing will only add to the existing charm of Cochrane.”
