The Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation (GRPF) is welcoming votes for the re-naming of the Foothills Fescue Research Institute.

And the options are: Shell Grasslands Recovery Project, Shell Rescue the Fescue Project, Shell Rescue the Fescue Initiative, and Shell Rangeland Recovery Initiative.

The four shortlisted names have been posted on the foundation’s website for the public to vote on the favourite. Voting will remain open until Jan. 12 at midnight.

“This is a fun way for the public to be involved with the GRPF,” said the organization’s executive director Susan de Caen in a press release. “The re-naming of the institute will make it clear that the partnership is providing native grassland research and education.”

The GRPF teamed up with Shell Canada in 2012. The $230,000 partnership expands on the grasslands research being done at the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, including the new in-school “Discover Grasslands” program.

“Through this partnership, Shell and the GRPF can research innovative ways to restore grasslands and store carbon,” said Amber Bassen, a communications advisor with Shell Canada. “Advancing land reclamation through native grassland research and weed management is an initiative important to both Shell and the communities near our operations.”

The Foothills Fescue Research Institute examines native plant species, along with how the park, private industry and individuals can conserve and restore native grassland.

The public is encouraged to visit grpf.ca/vote to vote for their favourite name. Online voters will be entered to win a $100 Shell gas gift card and a GRPF family membership.
