Wild Rose MP Blake Richards believes his government’s Pension Reform Act will help right the ship when it comes to the Canada pension system.

Bill C-46 was approved in the House of Commons on Oct. 19, and will result in a new 50-50 model for contribution rates for public service employees, MPs and senators. The age at which MPs and senators will be able to collect their pensions will also increase to 65, something Richards feels will help save taxpayers $2.6 billion over the next five years.

The move, however, was not easy according to Richards.

“Within the current political climate, opposition parties tend to reject government bills even before reading them,” Richards indicated in his weekly report. “However, on this issue, our government was able to secure unanimous support.”

The Wild Rose MP touted the efforts of Prime Minister Stephen Harper for getting this bill approved.

“More than any other MP, (Harper) stands to lose under the new legislation,” Richards claimed. “This bill will likely cost him more than a million dollars.”

The Pension Reform Act is part of this year’s Conservative budget and, as Richards pointed out, is intended to ‘take a scalpel to inefficient, redundant and outdated government programs.’
