Rocky View firefighters battling wildfire near gas plant along 1A Highway

A grass fire along the 1A Highway near Ghost Lake has resulted in the evacuation of two homes, a local gas station and the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant. RCMP are advising motorists to avoid the area.

ROCKY VIEW COUNTY – Firefighters are battling a grass fire that is burning near Highway 40 and the 1A Highway west of the town of Cochrane on Thursday afternoon (April 1).

Cochrane RCMP are assisting with efforts by the Rocky View Country Fire Department to contain the fire. Cpl. Tammy Keibel said two homes have been evacuated, as well as the Ghost Station Gas Bar and the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant along the 1A Highway.

According to an RCMP press release, traffic along the 1A is not moving west of Cochrane, or east of Highway 40. There may be significant effects on visibility due to smoke in the area.

Keibel said motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The fire, according to RCMP, is moving east. Emergency crews are monitoring the situation.
