Clad in leather and aboard a steel steed, riders in the fourth annual Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Poker Rally will be making their way to Cochrane for the first stop on the charitable trek through to Canmore and back.

Set to run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 14, the rally will support Wounded Warriors Canada, an initiative that helps members of the Canadian Forces who have been wounded or injured while serving for Canada.

Departing from the Cochrane Legion, participants will pick up a playing card at each stop along the journey. In addition to the legion, stops will be made in Exshaw (at the local legion), Canmore (at the Royal Canadian Legion), the Stoney Nakoda First Nation (at the Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino), before returning to Cochrane.

Prizes will be awarded to the rider with the best poker hand at the end of the 250-kilometre ride.

Mick Gee, a representative for the poker rally, advised riders to bring along a collection of loonies.

For $1, participants can buy the chance to play a game and acquire a different card — enabling them to up the value of their poker hand.

“All of the money raised through rider donations and registration fees, goes straight to Wounded Warriors Canada,” said Gee.

Last year, the event raised about $3,800 for the initiative. This year, Gee is aiming to raise at least $5,000.

“I think we can do it — each year the event grows,” he stated. “We do this to raise the profile of service men and women who have been injured in their job and ensure they get the treatment they need.”

Gee specifically mentioned the Canadian Forces members who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder — an illness he said can effect these individuals anytime and anywhere.

Post-ride, riders will be invited into the legion in Cochrane for a steak dinner and a dance. Live music will be provided by the Smoking Aces Blues Band.

Riders can register for a fee of $50 and passengers for $35. For addition information, contact Mick Gee at 403-669-7090.
